Overview

The Art and Design department, at Sophia Polytechnic, located in the heart of Mumbai, offers courses that are recognized by the Directorate of Art, Government of Maharashtra and affiliated by Maharashtra State Board of Art Education, Mumbai. In this department young creatives get the atmosphere to learn, grow and explore their talent in the visual art field. We offer One year Foundation course, Four year’s Applied Art course and Two year’s Textile design course.

Foundation Course

The Foundation course develops all the fundamental disciplines and perspectives about visual arts & crafts. The aspects of the art field which are taught are concepts, skills, mediums, design principals, colour theory and history of art.

Curriculum

The curriculum emphasis on learning the basics of form and structure along with the details of skill development to pursue visual art.

Applied Art

An intense, creative program where the students prepare for professional perspective in the field of graphic design and the world of advertising.

Curriculum

The curriculum encompasses various facets of Applied art. Such as graphic design, communication design, branding, packaging design, lettering, Typography, Calligraphy, Photography, Education, Infographics, ideation-based project and many more.

Course structure

Elementary Applied Art: (1st year - Internal exam)
This course is a step above the basics where the students are taught to be more specific yet experimental in their subjects that help to create a strong base for the field of design and advertising.

Intermediate Applied Art: (2nd year - Government exam)
The students are trained according to the professional ethics of the advertising and design world where they are exposed to the significant different communication medias. computer skills, research based project.

Advanced Applied art: (3rd year - Internal exam)
The salient point of this year is to enhance the conceptualization skills of the students. Greater stress is laid on verbal & visual skills. Also Creative, intelligent and strategic thinking and to improve aesthetic and technical knowledge. Students complete an internship which helps and prepares them for the world that awaits them.

Diploma Applied Art: (4th year - Government exam)
This is the final year where the students do intensive research for their Advertising campaign  and are educated on how to work professionally in the corporate world also by making them aware about career opportunities in animation, story boarding, branding, UI/UX and many more.
Student have to do in-depth study in any one of the Elective subjects- Typography, photography or Illustration.

Textile Designing

Textile Design is the technical and creative process in which fibers are interlaced to form a fabric, which is eventually dyed or printed upon or otherwise adorned.

Curriculum

The Textile Design curriculum caters to all the aspects of designing and gives opportunity to the students to create and experiment with design and imparts extensive training to the students and prepare them for the industry.

  4. Technical Theory.

  5. History of Art.

First year Textile Designing
Preference is given to learning the basics of each topic. Under the Design application subject, practical topics like stencil printing, Tie & Dye, block printing, batik, screen printing are taught. Technical knowledge about how textiles from fiber to fabric is taught in theory subject. History of Art is the second theory subject which encompasses the study of Western Art.

Diploma/ Second year in Textile Designing
In the Diploma/second year, importance is given to the specialization in Printing/Dyeing. All the assignments are based mainly on advanced study of printing and dyeing techniques. Same two theory subjects are incorporated in the Second year only change being the History of Western and Indian textiles.
Apart from these core subject, emphasis is laid on learning specialized software’s in order to explore digital methods to design, fabric structures and surfaces. Also, a number of workshops, events and activities are organized for the students to make them aware about the art & craft culture of our country and make them sensitive to the traditional art.

  • How should I prepare for the entrance test?
    Preparation for the entrance test only requires an awareness of current events as reported by the media and issues concerning the media. This year, as a part of the admission process, you will be undergoing a Personal Interview and completing an assignment assigned to you at the time of the interview. The assignment and time required for the submission will be communicated to you at the time of the interview. Make sure you have some contact with media every day: Watch news, spend at least half an hour on a newspaper or a news source of your choice. Watch films, look at ads, TV shows, and web series and be prepared to talk about them.
  • Are there any additional expenses during the course?
    Since the course involves a considerable amount of practical work, expenses are incurred by the student on project materials and travel within the city. Students are also advised to have their own laptops to the extent possible.
  • What are my chances of getting into the hostel?
    Hostel facilities are only available for women. There are approximately 6 - 8 seats for Social Communications Media students in the women’s hostel. Selection for the hostel is not dependent only on academic performance or performance in the Entrance Tests. Several other aspects are taken into consideration. If you are anxious to join the Social Communications Media course and you do not get hostel accommodation please be prepared to make your own arrangements for accommodation.
  • If I find the fees unaffordable, can I apply for financial help?
    Yes, there are provisions for financial assistance. We offer need-based financial aid to assist 1–2 students each year.
