Overview

The Art and Design department, at Sophia Polytechnic, located in the heart of Mumbai, offers courses that are recognized by the Directorate of Art, Government of Maharashtra and affiliated by Maharashtra State Board of Art Education, Mumbai. In this department young creatives get the atmosphere to learn, grow and explore their talent in the visual art field. We offer One year Foundation Certificate in Art and Design course. Three Years Diploma Applied Art course and Three Years Diploma in Art and Craft Textile Design (Printing and Dyeing) course.

Foundation Certificate in Art and Design

The Foundation Certificate in Art and Design is an introductory programme that builds a strong base in various art forms, techniques, and creative practices. It bridges school-level art education with advanced studies in visual arts and design.

The programme encourages students to experiment with different materials and styles, helping them discover their strengths, interests, and creative potential. It also helps students understand and choose the creative field best suited to their abilities.

The course includes practical and theoretical learning through projects, seminars, and guidance from tutors and specialized artisans.The curriculum is aligned with NEP-2020, and credits and NCrF Level. 

Curriculum

Semester 1.

This program builds a strong artistic foundation through drawing, design, sketching, and traditional Indian art practices. Students develop observation skills, visual perception, and creative expression through indoor and outdoor sketching, perspective studies, and composition exercises. The curriculum introduces essential design elements such as line, shape, texture, and form while encouraging hands-on exploration of artistic techniques. It also celebrates the richness of Indian traditional folk art and craft, helping students connect with cultural heritage, sustainability, and regional artistic traditions.

Semester 2

This program enhances creative and technical skills through advanced drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art, and tattoo design. Students develop expertise in observation, composition, visual storytelling, and artistic expression while exploring both traditional Indian art practices and contemporary creative techniques. The curriculum combines hands-on learning with digital innovation to prepare learners for careers in fine arts, illustration, textile design, and applied arts.

Diploma in Applied Art

An intense, creative program where the students prepare for a professional perspective in the field of graphic design and the world of advertising.  It is aligned with NEP-2020, including credits and NCrF levels.

Curriculum

This specialized three-year program comprising 6 semesters is designed to cultivate both artistic creativity and professional expertise in the fields of Graphic design and Advertising.


This high octane curriculum offers a comprehensive foundation in developing and empowering creative energies.


Emphasis is placed on creative expression, discipline, ideation and thinking out of the box in various facets of Applied Art like Branding, Packaging design, Photography, Typography, Calligraphy, Illustration, Printing technologies and other aligned subjects.


Students engage in hands-on learning experience through practical projects, internships and industry exposure.


This program blends traditional design with new-age digital techniques enabling them to develop a cutting edge perspective in communication design and professional ethics to pursue diverse careers in the creative industry.

Semester -1

This course forms the basis in understanding the different fundamentals and principles of visual communication. This helps the students to be experimental in their subjects and inculcate a strong sense of design aesthetics.

The salient point of this semester is to enhance the conceptualization skills of the students. Greater stress is laid on verbal & visual skills to improve aesthetic and technical knowledge in the field of advertising

Diploma in Textile Design

This specialized three-year program comprising 6 semesters is designed for individuals who are motivated learners eager to explore the world of textiles through innovative design and sustainable practices as per the demand of the market or industry. This programme will serve as a gateway to advanced studies in various art and design, especially in the textile field, which provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the dynamic field of textile business. It is aligned with NEP-2020, including credits and NCrF levels.

Curriculum

1st semester

This semester introduces students to the essential principles of visual art and design through a comprehensive study of drawing, color, composition, texture, and cultural context. It develops observational skills, visual awareness, and technical control while encouraging creativity and critical thinking. Students explore natural and man-made forms, understand the theory and application of color, learn the fundamentals of design in both 2D and 3D, and experiment with textures. The program is further enriched by an exploration of the history of Indian textiles, fostering cultural appreciation and inspiring contemporary creative practices.

2nd semester

This semester introduces students to the fundamentals of textile design through both creative and technical learning. It begins with drawing and design, where students explore 2D and 3D composition using various materials and techniques. Design visualization helps transform ideas into clear visual forms using traditional and digital methods. The design software component builds digital skills required in the modern textile industry.

Students also learn about textile fibers, including their classification, properties, and identification techniques. The world textiles course explores textile traditions across Asian, European, and African cultures, highlighting their cultural and global significance. Finally, fabric replication focuses on creating repeated patterns using traditional and modern methods, developing precision and industry-ready skills.

Semester 3

This semester blends creativity, technology, and tradition to build strong foundations in textile and fashion design. The curriculum also celebrates the rich heritage of traditional Indian textiles, encouraging innovation, cultural awareness, and industry-ready skills for careers in textile, fashion, and design industries.
