Kalamkari Workshop Image description The Art & Design Dept. had organized kalamkari workshop for diploma textile students from 8th June to 12th June, 2015. Mr. Niranjan Gurappa Chetty a national award winner and master craftsman was invited to give demonstration of his skill and art. The art of kalamkari is an ancient of exquisite form of textile painting dating back to the ancient times. It is made up of 2 words - kalam-means - pen and kari/quari-means to decorate/craftsmanship. Historically, hand block-printed kalamkari widely practised in masulipatnam and hand painted kalamkari is mostly done in Srikalahasti, both in Andra Pradesh. Natural dyes used for both the forms of kalamkari. For motifs, Hindu epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Shiv Puran, Vishnu Puran and other legendary myths & tales were narrated and illustrated in elaborate ornate style in vibrant colour palette of red, white, black, blue, green and yellow. Students had a great exposure and fun while practising this art form
